Master's Thesis Project:
BENCH/: Multi-Sensory Lifestyle Store

Bench/, a Philippine-based lifestyle brand, the retail chain Bench/ started carrying Men's T-shirts and has now grown to carrying a wide variety of lines, including clothing, housewares, fragrances, and more. Along with this growth, Bench/ has ventured out Internationally. Currently, they have 83 International stores established, three located in the West Coast Area of the US. For this thesis project, the design project was for a store established on the East Coast of the US -- Washington DC Metropolitan Area. This design project will serve as a template retail store.

The site for this project is located on Explorer Street in Reston, Virginia. Through case studies of existing retail stores in the area, the researcher/designer investigated how the retail scape influenced the shopper's behavior through the human senses. The results were summarized into a design checklist that defined a set of design guidelines that were applied to the design project outcomes.

Design Studio Project: Bellagio Gallery + Cafe

The design concept for Bellagio Gallery+Café’s built environment is a relaxing and welcoming, community place that provides an infinite exposure to the arts. This exposure is facilitated through the use of transparent and flexible space – spaces that will encourage and facilitates interaction and social connection. This social connection is going to be a "journal-type of environment".  That is, a new atmosphere that is inspired, shaped and created by the dynamic flow of individual creativity and ideas; however, whose ideas are linked together through the celebration and sharing of their own multi-sensory experience.

“A place that is inspired by every person; A place where a person can be inspired”

SAS is a second-generation, family owned shoe manufacturer.  The founders were Terry Armstrong and Lew Hayden.  They opened SAS in 1976 in San Antonio, Texas.  These gentlemen were originally shoemakers in Maine and relocated for several reasons including the great climate and business potential in Texas.

Furniture Design Project: The Accentric Collection

Free-flowing, dynamic and moving.

In this furniture design class, students were exposed to the manipulation of different forms, shapes and structures. Using The Elements of Design, by Rowena Reed Kostellow, each student was to develop a sculptural form, shape and/or structure that relates to their own personality. The developed sculpture was then to be used as an inspiration into designing a furniture collection.

Shown is my furniture collection derived from the “self” inspiration – creativity, free-flowing ideas, and the continuous flow of patterns and ideas.

The collection is called "Acentric" : each piece can stand by itself and can be used as an accent piece; but still look great when combined together. The furniture is designed to multi-functional for indoor use or outdoor use.
